Oooh baby. April was a fantastic month of music. If you took all of my favorite electronic artists and put their names back to back it would look pretty DAMN. close to this month’s playlist. Per usual, artists start putting out work as soon all of the festival tickets go on sale and I’m not complaining. Recently locked in going to Bonnaroo myself and I’m beyond hyped. Almost every one of these songs is conducive to some sort of party, get-together, or happy time with friends – whether it’s raging at a concert, bouncing at a club, bumping at a house party, or vibing with your close friends.
We start off with the best of the best. A new release from ODESZA, a banging remix from Win & Woo, a stunning take on Wall Fuck by Gramatik and Ramzoid. After a brief venture into indie pop thx to SAKIMA and kiiara we experiment with some chiller indie electronica full of pleasant melodies and warm chords. Enjoy it while it lasts – the more energetic the songs become the closer we are to a massive house, deep house, trap section of the playlist that gets continually more experimental and (sometimes) absurd. This section is the cutting edge of sound experimentation in electronic music, and when it hits you in new ways it’s hitting right.
Once you pass through the gauntlet you’re in for some nice hip-hop courtesy of Frank Ocean, D.R.A.M., Goldlink and AMINÉ that blends seamlessly into a brief bit of funky electronica. The home stretch is a great selection of upbeat and happy future bass and general electronica that gently slows down to a quiet end with acoustic vibes. Enjoy below!
- 1-26: Energetic electronica
- 27-43: Increasingly aggressive deep house music
- 44-62: Trap
- 63-70: Hip-hop
- 71-95: Energetic future bass
- 96-99: Chill electronica and acoustic vibes
As winter gradually loosens its grip on the Northern Hemisphere and we ease our way into spring, people everywhere are finding excuses to spend more time outside. From ambitious darties to brisk chill sessions, time spent outdoors in these transition months can almost always be improved with some tunes. Up and coming artists have not slowed their production at all these last few weeks, and I’ve collected the best for you below. Please hit up the “Vibe guide” below if you want to jump to music that’ll make you feel a certain way.
This time we’re starting off on a chiller, happier vibe with songs that are designed to instill feelings of energy and positivity. Then, as the BPMs go up and the synths get louder, we can start head bumping to some energetic future bass with pop influences. The colorful melodies eventually drop out and are replaced by more experimental, bass-heavy tracks that showcase innovative production techniques. When the beat stabilizes after all that chill trap, you’ll find yourself vibing out to some deep, but pleasant house music for a bit.
The house music eventually fades out to make room for very chill future bass – a calm sub-genre that lets you truly explore the sounds that the producer has arranged for you. Chill future bass slowly becomes less chill, and before we delve into the dark underworld of modern electronica we can enjoy some soaring melodies paired with oscillating bass that make you wanna jump up and down. Then things get intense. For almost the next 30 songs we are going as hard as possible with a mix of trap, techno, and hard deep house. This is the stuff of underground clubs and music festival side stages. In a half-hearted attempt to repair the damage done to you after listening to that, the playlist tapers out with some very chill, very beautiful electronica and a Yeezy remix. Enjoy.
1-6: Chiller, happy electronica
7-10: Future bass
12-17: Chiller trap
18-28: House, mostly deep
29-31: Energetic electronica
32-38: Chill future bass
39-57: Increasingly energetic future bass
58-75: Increasingly insane trap
80-85: Hard deep house
86-88: Chiller deep house
89-94: Misc. electronica
95-106: Increasingly chill electronica
107: Pure yeezy
Fall is a time of transition, and in the world of live music that means the end of festivals and the beginning of the autumn touring season. Indoor shows often offer a more intimate experience – you’re closer to the artist and the crowd tends to be more into the music. In this month’s playlist I offer up the best tracks released so far this fall, some of which you’ll hopefully have the chance to enjoy live in the next couple of months.
We start our journey with the biggest hits in the electronic scene right now, songs that are high-energy tributes to the constantly evolving and improving world of music. Future-bass, electro-funk and deep house are all included. Then we take it down a notch and focus on calmer tracks with an emphasis on lyricism and melodic vibes. This primes us for a slow and steady increase in energy that culminates in twenty-song streak of straight deep house and trap music. This is a small glimpse of the deeper, darker side of electronica that is perfect for a dance floor or weight room. To change sounds but maintain high energy levels, we switch to some unique future-bass and then transition to some melodic house. Then the playlist begins to get less structured. The last section is an eclectic mix of alt-rock and indie electronica that is worth showcasing, but hard to classify. These tracks give way to fifteen calm tracks that border on ambient – a perfect way to transition back to the real world. Enjoy below.
