Welcome to this week’s edition of Sunday 5elect, where Economix readers get insight into the top five tracks dominating my headphones right now. “High energy” is the vibe that dominates this week, and each song achieves that vibe differently. Enjoy below.
1. ye. – (hlsy flip)
ye. is back with a future bass flip of Halsey’s “New Americana”. Heavily filtered vocals are chopped up to create a driving chorus that is uniquely singable for an indie electronic song. This is a great example of how pop sounds can be harnessed into tracks that drive the genre forward.
2. MUTEMATH – Light Up (yacht club. remix)
yacht club.’s first track in three months is a slightly trippy yet extremely catchy remix of MUTEMATHS’s “Light Up”. The Ohio-based duo focus in on the last word of the hook and transform it into an instrument of its own that defines the drop.
3. Imogen Heap – The Dumbing Down of Love (COFRESi Remix)
COFRESi takes us to the darker side of electronic music with a spacey track that weaves Imogen Heap’s haunting vocals in between synths that ebb and flow in powerful waves. Not a party song, but one that deserves a hard listen.
4. oriJanus – 15
This track has been out for a year now, but I heard it live for the first time last week and it was an unreal experience. Extremely danceable and very happy, this track gets the crowd going in ways that not many songs can.
5. San Holo – birdmix 2
San Holo’s label bitbird is known for fostering unique sounds that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. birdmix 2 is the ultimate showcase of those sounds, a seamless blend of the best alt-electronica out there.
